ORLANDO ORTEGA Memorial Fund & Remembrance Ceremony

Orlando Ortega was brutally murdered on Tuesday night, May 29, 2007.

Rest In Peace

Orlando Sanz Ortega Ortega

02/16/1976 - 05/29/2007

Orlando spent his last night at a theatre, watching Pirates of the Carribbean 3, with his friends. Afterward, he dropped them off at home and headed towards his own apartment on North Sweetzer Avenue, between Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevard. Sometime before midnight, the sound of gunfire was heard. Alert neighbors were horrified to find him lying on the street. Severely injured. Alone. Emergency Response Services were summoned and he was transported to the hospital, but by that time, it may have already been too late. He had been mortally wounded. He was pronounced dead.

[An investigation is ongoing. There are so many questions that are being asked. So many answers that we desperately want to find. If you have any information regarding this crime, please call the Sheriff Department, Homicide Division, at 323.89.5500. ]

He was born in Managua, Nicaragua. When he was 8 years old he emigrated, with his mother and older sister, to the United States, where they lived in the Bronx. He had always had a certain artistic passion that was not fully developed. He had chosen a career that appeared promising, however, a certain change in the business climate caused career setbacks nationwide. He decided to change his path. He left his friends and family in the boroughs of New York and drove all the way Los Angeles where he began to unleash his passion and pursue his dream of acting.

Many of us knew Orlando from one of the Cantina's on a West Hollywood boulevard, where he worked as a server, bartender and manager, while developing his craft, gaining experience and earning acting, producing and writing credits. (www.imdb.com/name/nm1554972/bio) Whether someone first met him at Fiesta Cantina on Santa Monica Boulevard, or later on when he went up the hill to Cabo Cantina on Sunset Boulevard, wherever he was, he most surely made an impression on everyone that he met. Once he got to West Hollywood, he met many new people and created such a strong bond with those close friends and colleagues, that they became his second family. Whatever interaction you may have had with him, will most certainly find many fond memories to reflect upon. ( www.myspace.com/extremecool)

This act of violence has one consequence that is very clear. A beautiful life was cut short. An entire neighborhood may no longer feel safe. A financial and emotional burden has been created for his family and friends. Orlando's biological family are traveling to California in order to claim his body and take him back home to New York for burial. His West Hollywood family is still numb with shock and utter disbelief. The Cantina family has lost a dear member. West Hollywood will surely miss him.

A Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 03, 2007, at 8:00 PM on the Rooftop Lounge at Fiesta Cantina (8851 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90069). Join us as we gather to share the memories and celebrate the life of Orlando Ortega. Fiesta Cantina will also donate all sales on that night, beginning at 8:00 PM, toward funeral costs and expenses. Invite your friends to join us for a cocktail, every purchase will help.

A Memorial Fund has been established, to raise additional funds in order to defray funeral and travel expenses for his family. Donations accepted at the Remembrance Ceremony as well as at:
